I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO CREATE A ZIP FILE SO THAT I CAN BULK UPLOAD MY IMAGES?

Creating a ZIP files is very straightforward, but the methods differ for different computer platforms. One thing that applies to all platforms is that you can not create a ZIP file of your folder of images. You have to directly select the images inside of the folder that you would like to upload.

WINDOWS XP

On PC there are numerous methods of zipping images up. If your computer uses Windows XP then all you need to do is select the images you want to zip up, holding shift to select multiple images, and then “right click” on the selection. From the context menu that pops up select “send To” , then choose “Compressed (Zipped) Folder”. This will create a new zip file using the file name of the first image in your selection. When uploading your zip file just browse to this zip file and let our system do the rest.

WINDOWS 2000

If you have an older operating system than Windows XP then you will need to install a 3rd party zipping software such as WinZip or WinRar. WinZip is available as a free download from www.winzip.com.

Once you have installed WinZIp or similar, select the images you wish to zip, holding shift to select multiple images, and then “right click” over the selection. From the context menu that pops up choose “Add to Zip” or “Add to…..filename.zip”. Again just navigate to this file when using the bulk upload system.

MAC OS X

If you are running OS X 10.3 or later, the ability to create Zip archives is built into the operating system. Simply control-click on a folder containing your files and select "Create Archive," as shown:

This option is also available under the "File" menu in the Finder.

If you are running a pre-10.3 version of OS X, you can use ZipIt as described for OS 9 and earlier. The current version of ZipIt is OS X native and will work on both operating systems. When uploading your zip file just browse to this zip file and let our system do the rest.

MAC OS 9.x AND EARLIER

To zip files on a Macintosh, use a program called ZipIt ( http://www.maczipit.com/).

When using this program, the first window you see is empty.

In this example, the two files test.doc and test2.pdf will be zipped by first dragging their icons into the window.

You then want to save your zip file or archive. So, choose Save As from the File menu.

You will see that the extension of the file you want to save is set to zip. You can save your file as a self-extracting archive for someone who does not have ZipIt or some other extraction program on their computer.

Now you see that the archive is titled test.zip, and the icon for the zipped file is shown at the right.  The file test.zip is the one to be uploaded to Getagallery.

PREPARING YOUR IMAGES.

The maximum you can upload in one go using Getagallery is 5Mb. If your images have come directly from your digital camera then each image may be 1Mb or more. Therefore you would only be able to upload 5 raw images at once.

To make the process a lot easier and speedy, it is beneficial to batch resize your chosen images either before zipping up or uploading using the multiple file upload system. You can do this using most popular photo editing. If you do not have this functionality then a free utility is available for download for pc from http://bluefive.pair.com/PIXresizer.zip
. Getagallery has no affiliation with PIXresizer whatsoever.

What is PIXresizer?

PIXresizer is a tool for quickly generating screen-friendly versions of your images with dramatically reduced file sizes. It is a photo resizing program that enables you to quickly resize one file or a selection of image files for use on the web and in e-mail. The reduced files are saved in a different directory, so your original pictures are not changed.

The program offers several different resizing methods to choose from and can automatically recognize image sizes to calculate the best fit. PIXresizer includes a built-in image viewer and you can also convert between graphics formats: it opens and saves in .bmp, .gif, .jpg, .png, and .tif formats. A great companion for webmasters and digital photographers.

How do I use PIXresizer for use with Getagallery?

Download the zip file and run the setup program. Once installed run the program. It will look like this:

To be able to use PIXresizer best it is advisable to do a little preparation. Create a new folder on your hard disk probably in your "My Pictures" folder. Then copy all the images you want to resize into this folder. Then make a secondary folder for the resized images, this can be inside the first folder.

Then in PIXresizer, click the "Work with Multiple Files" tab.

  1. Click the "Source" button and find the folder where your images are.
  2. Click the "Destination" button and find the folder you wish the resized images to go (this may be inside your source folder).
  3. Change the "Select new size" slider to 800.
  4. Click the "Save Pictures" button.

That is pretty much it. It is then a case of uploading your newly resized images from your Destination folder above to your gallery.

EDITING IMAGE CAPTIONS

Once you have uploaded your images, you can add text to describe that image. You will know this if you have uploaded any single images. Assuming you have used the batch upload facility, you can list your images per category and change the order of images by cliccking on the "List Photo" button. Once there you will see your images listed.

By clicking on the icon you can edit an individual image.

Here you can change the name and description of your image here as well as upload a new thumbnail, if you do not like the one automatically created by the system. The description you enter here will show up when you mouse over the Image Info button.

If you are using the PRO version of GetaGallery then you have the option of using the two tier navigation system. To actually make it work though you need to organise your categories properly. Login in and then go to the "BUILD" section. You then need to slightly re-organise your categories. Below is a graphic showing an example.

By default any new categories will be created with "Top" as their parent category. If you have already created all of your categories, then all you need do is edit the ones you wish to make into sub-categories by changing their parent category setting. Set this to the category you wish your sub category to be inside.

So for example. The "ABOUT US" category above has "INTRODUCTION" as its parent category. This means that on the finished gallery, the "ABOUT US" section is a sub-category of "INTRODUCTION".
